The ikat straps: Stylish look and a suitable option
Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric.
In ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern (ikat means "to bind" in the Indonesian language). The yarns are then dyed. The bindings may then be altered to create a new pattern and the yarns dyed again with another colour.
When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth. There is a possibility of creating the most amazing designs by following the same process and in different unique colours. This fabric is used in many things, such as clothes, bags, wallets, and even footwear. It is said to be easier to decompose, and it is helpful to have products made of this fabric for a safe environment.
If you haven't tried ikat footwear yet, it's time to go shopping for something new. At Murtle, in our collection, we offer footwear with changeable straps made of ikat. And as you know how big fans we are of sustainability; we do our best to maintain it.
On all of our pamphlets and banners, we have a tagline that says, "One Single Sole Infinite Possibilities," and to demonstrate the same, one distinctive and popular material is fabric. Fabric as a material is not very common in everyday use footwear, but with the option of changeability, new options for Murtle straps have opened up. Because Murtle is situated in Hyderabad, Telangana, we wanted to start employing its weaving legacy, the world-famous Ikat.
Which type of ikat is used in our footwears?
There are many different ways of weaving and dying ikat, which generate its three different kinds:
- Wrap ikat
The warp threads of warp ikat are dyed in ikat patterns while the weft threads are dyed in a single hue.
- Weft ikat
Weft ikat is the inverse of warp ikat in that the patterned component is the weft thread, while the warp thread is just a single color.
- Double ikat
Double ikat is the most difficult type of ikat since it uses ikat-dyed warp and weft threads. Because it is difficult to make these two designs overlap correctly, double ikat is a little more valuable than other variants.
Among these types of Ikat, we decided to use the most difficult and now widely woven in Pochampally, Double Ikat. Double Ikat is a technique in which both the warp and the weft are resist-dyed before weaving. Click here to learn more about ikat weaving.
We then went to weavers in Pochampally, about 80 kilometers from Hyderabad, and chose colors that go well with our collection of Eazys. We intend to popularize them and advance ikat only as straps, providing the grassroots weaver with another option to monetize his art and skill.
The benefits of using Ikat straps
When we were designing our changeable straps collection with ikat, there were these benefits in our mind:
- The ikat fabrics absorb sweat and swiftly evaporate it.
- good thermoregulation and the capability to adapt to changes in human body temperature.
- Ikat footwear has a long lifespan due to its high wear resistance.
- hygienic and the right fabric to defend against bacteria growth on the skin or parasite attacks.
- It looks stylish and footwear made of ikat straps are easy to wear
Ikat is fashionable and a trend which will never get old. I am sure you would like to buy a stylish pair with changeable ikat straps for yourself or gift them to your loved ones.
