Ikat Strap collection
We have a tag line on all our pamphlets and banners, "One sole Infinite possibilities" and to establish the same one distinctive and popular material is fabric. One can observe that fabric as a material is not very popular on a daily wear footwear but with the option of changeability, new possibilities have opened up for Murtle straps. Since Murtle is based out of Hyderabad, Telangana we wanted to start using its heritage in weaving, the world famous Ikat.
Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric.
In ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern (ikatmeans "to bind" in the Indonesian language). The yarns are then dyed. The bindings may then be altered to create a new pattern and the yarns dyed again with another colour. This process may be repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multicolored patterns. When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth.
Among several types of Ikat, we decided to use the most difficult and now widely woven in Pochampally, Double Ikat. Double Ikat is a technique in which both warp and the weft are resist-dyed prior to weaving. There is a link to video in this blog which will clear up the whole concept of Ikat weaving for you.
We then went to weavers in Pochampally which is around 80 Kms from Hyderabad and selected the colours which go well with Eazys. We look forward to popularise these and hope to move ikkat only as straps helping the grass root weaver with an other avenue to monetise his art and skill.
